Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them.

20160705-039164-EditThis page is for those who would like to prepare a funeral for a loved one nearing death or recently deceased. If you would like the Pastor to come for anointing, confession, and/or Holy Communion, please call this number (608) 831-4843.

You may contact the Pastor to prepare a funeral for those who have died or who are nearing death. We would like to help you prepare with some of the following guidance.

First, you should decide which church, priest, and funeral home you would like for the funeral. The home parish of the deceased and the pastor are often the best choice and if you do not have a preferred funeral home, the pastor can put you in contact with one.

The purchase of a cemetery plot is another important step. Whether or not you have the funeral at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church you may choose to have your loved one buried at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Cemetery. For further information on purchasing plots see our cemetery page.

Next, you may consider which of the funeral rites you would like to include as your family prays for the repose of the soul of your loved one. We would encourage everyone to celebrate a Mass if the family is a majority Catholic. If many members of the family are not Catholic or no longer practicing, the funeral rite without a Mass would be fitting. You may then offer a Mass intention for your loved one at a later date. Please also consider whether you would like a small prayer service, called the Vigil, during the wake. The funeral rites will conclude with the Rite of Committal at the cemetery where the loved one is buried.

20160705-039055-EditIf you choose to have a Mass or Vigil, you may select readings from the following document. In choosing readings and music it is important to remember the purpose of the Funeral Rites and the needs of your family. At Funerals the Church prays for the soul of the deceased and celebrates the miracle of the Resurrection. With this in mind, consider also whether you family needs to hear words of forgiveness, strength, grieving, or hope in the face of death and use the readings and the music to convey this message. If you are unsure about what to select, speak with Father and he can help you choose or choose for you.
